Baranta
The traditional martial art of the Hungarians.
About
Baranta is the traditional martial art of the Hungarians. The word means "competing with weapons, training for a fight", and it has survived mainly in the west and south of Hungary. Baranta has two branches, infantry and cavalry, each with ten kinds of contest.
Baranta uses the bow, the sabre, the short and the long stick, the spear, the axe, the shield, the long whip and the knife; hand-to-hand fighting includes belt wrestling and wrestling with strikes. Its organisation was laid down in 1991 on the basis of research by Ferenc Vukics at the Kossuth Lajos Military Academy. About 2,500 people in more than a hundred communities in six countries practise baranta.
