Gagauz güreş
Among the Gagauz, wrestling is held together with horse races.
About
Among the Gagauz wrestling — güreş — is tied to the festivals of the folk calendar. According to the ethnographer E. N. Kvilinkova, at Easter, alongside the young people's amusements — the horo dance and the swings — wrestling contests were held, with a ram as the prize for the winner.
On St Theodore's Day, the first Saturday of Lent, horse races were held for prizes. The inter-village gatherings too were accompanied by sacrifices, by horse racing and wrestling, by general merrymaking and fairs.
