Han-biy, kochhar, tokhana

Knucklebone games of the Karachay-Balkars.

About

Han-biy, kochhar and tohana are names of the knucklebone (ashyk) games of the Karachay-Balkars. As U. Tuzman writes, the Karachay-Balkars have several kinds of knucklebone game: huna teshik (guren oyun), ashyk atuv, ashyk tiyirishuv, the han-biy game, kochhar ("ram"), chykyp oynav, tohana and sadra oyun.

In the throwing games the knucklebones are set out inside a circle, a throwing line is drawn five to ten paces away, and the players in turn try to hit the bones from that line. The age of the game is shown by the Nart epic, in which children playing knucklebones swear by the name of the epic's hero. The separate rules of han-biy, kochhar and tohana are not given in the source that opens.
