Kyrgyz kurosh

The national wrestling of the Kyrgyz.

About

In Kyrgyz kurosh the wrestlers stand in a circle, come up to each other and place their hands on the opponent's waist: the bout starts from this hold. Wrestlers aged sixteen and over take part.

History

As O. Karataev writes, among the ancient Turks wrestling was not merely a festive spectacle but a military art used in war, and in the course of time it became a contest. In Kyrgyz oral tradition the wrestler comes out with a belt — bel boo — tied round his waist; in the Manas epic Koshoi and Zholoi try their strength precisely in belt wrestling.

The forms of this old wrestling are known today as alysh, Leilek kurosh and Kara-Darya kurosh; tripping, wrestling on the knees and twisting the arms or legs are forbidden in them. The first world championship in alysh was held in the city of Osh in 2002, with wrestlers from more than thirty countries.
