About

Tokpok chachary is the Altaians' contest of throwing a wooden mace, or mallet, as far as possible. Today it is in the sports programme of the El-Oiyn festival, where it is held alongside Altai kuresh, horse racing, stone lifting and archery. The festival was first held in 1988 and takes place every two years.

N. Ekeev names the throwing of a wooden mallet or mace among the favourite strength contests of the Altaians, beside stone lifting.

Rules in brief

The mace is wooden and made of larch; it is up to one metre long. Both men and women take part: the mace weighs up to ten kilograms for men and up to five for women. The throw is made from a circle at least two metres across; the one who throws the mace farthest wins. The contest recalls the hammer throw.
