Sinsimak

A school of martial art practised to this day in Buryatia.

About

In the sources that open, sinsimak is the name of a wushu school practised in Buryatia — in the Baikal region and in Ulan-Ude. As it is described, the system came directly from China, took shape under the influence of traditional Chinese systems and adapted to local conditions; it has been known in the region since the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Later the school became known as Teskao; it was taught by Yu. N. Monkhoev.

The technique has almost no high kicks or jumping kicks; it includes elements of wrestling and a great many preparatory exercises. No source has been found that ties sinsimak to the Tuvans.

In the scholarly literature too (G. I. Shirokov, N. V. Abaev, 1989) sinsimak is described as a school of martial art that exists to this day in Buryatia and arose under some influence of traditional Chinese systems. In style it is close to the "internal" direction of the Chinese arts of single combat; besides fighting techniques it takes in healing gymnastics, a special diet and methods of massage.
