Hunting with tazy hounds
Hunting with tazy sighthounds, an old tradition of the Kazakhs and the Turkmens.
About
The Kazakh tazy is a breed of hunting sighthound that comes from Kazakhstan. Historically hares, foxes, badgers, wild boar, deer and saiga were hunted with the tazy, and its skill at running down wolves was prized above all.
In nomadic times it was thought improper to call this breed simply a dog, and a Kazakh is said to have given 47 horses for one tazy. Today there are fewer than 300 purebred dogs, and the government of Kazakhstan is taking steps to keep the breed from dying out. In September 2024 the Kazakh tazy was accepted by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale.
