About
Goresh is the national wrestling of the Turkmens and a fixed part of weddings and festivals. The wrestlers wear the national robe, the don, tied with a soft cloth belt. Holds may be taken on the belt and on any part of the robe above the belt, and leg techniques are allowed.
The wrestler who throws his opponent on to his back, or makes him touch the ground with three points, wins. A contest is made up of three meetings with no time limit: whoever wins two of the three is the winner. Goresh was on the programme of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Ashgabat in 2017.
Rules in brief
At international contests goresh is held by the rules of United World Wrestling. The wrestlers wear white trousers and a green or a red shirt, tie a blue belt and come out in wrestling shoes. The bout takes place on a standard 12 by 12 metre wrestling mat and, in every age group, is a single period of three minutes.
There are two kinds of goresh. In classic goresh it is forbidden to take hold of the opponent below the belt, to trip him or to use the legs in a move; in freestyle goresh the opponent's legs may be held, trips are allowed and the legs may be used actively. A point goes to the wrestler who makes his opponent touch the ground with any part of the body other than the feet.
A bout is won on points — by at least one point more — or by technical superiority, a lead of two points; it also ends when the opponent has had three cautions, is injured, forfeits or is disqualified. The senior weight categories are: men — 57, 62, 68, 75, 82, 90, 100 kg and over 100 kg; women — 52, 58, 63, 70, 75 kg and over 75 kg.
