Dayanak (stick fighting game)
A combat game on foot.
About
The stick game is a combat game that shepherds used to play in the parts of Azerbaijan where the Tarakama live: the players attack each other with sticks and defend themselves.
The researcher Fuzuli Bayat regards it as a variant of matrak, the game played by Ottoman warriors. In matrak the players hold a stick instead of a sword and a shield in the other hand.
As F. Bayat describes it, in matrak, the kindred game, the blow is given lightly on the head and every hit counts as a point; striking hard and causing injury are forbidden, and the one with the most points wins. The game begins to a martial tune and ends at the referee's command. The players thank each other on coming out and, when the game is over, ask pardon for the blows they have given — which teaches respect for the opponent.
