Kara kaplan
A martial art. In Tatarstan at the end of the 20th century there was an attempt to revive the ancient Tatar martial art under the names Kara Kaplan and Alyptar.
About
Kara Kaplan ("black tiger") is an ancient Tatar school of combat. As it is described, it joined the handling of weapons — bow, sword, lance, dagger and mace — with hand-to-hand fighting, riding and training in endurance; the last warriors to have mastered it fully are held to be those of the Crimean Khanate.
In 1989–1990 Altaf Gülahmedov (Kulakhmetov; 1960–2020), a Tatar born in Baku and an officer of the Azerbaijani special forces, tried to revive Kara Kaplan: joining elements of karate, taekwondo and Vietnamese martial arts with his own military experience, he published the system under this name. The attempt did not spread — teaching stopped in 1997. Today Kara Kaplan is not active.
