Tymak uryp zhygu
Knocking down a hat blindfolded.
About
Tymak uryp zhygu is a mounted game played mostly by the Kazakhs and the Kyrgyz. The rider is blindfolded with a kerchief, turned round several times on the spot and then let go: he has to find the cap on top of a post and knock it to the ground with his whip.
Whoever manages it is the winner. Fuzuli Bayat calls this game the Central Asian variant of the Azerbaijani "cap game"; it also had forms played on foot.
As E. Qairakhan describes it, a pole no taller than the player is set in the ground and a tymak — a fur hat with ear-flaps — is put on top of it. The player looks to see where the hat stands and is then blindfolded. Each player has three attempts; one who misses all three can earn three more by showing a skill of his own — singing a song or reciting verses.
